April 1 is a popular day for virus and malware writers, who like to "time bomb" their malicious software to do its dirty work on that day. This year, Conficker C is expected to launch an attack on April Fool's day.
The Conficker worm is a little like one of those B movie monsters. It seems you can't kill it; it just keeps on rising up from the dead, and in a new iteration that's even more vicious than the one before. The latest variant, Conficker.C, turns off security services and blocks your computer from connecting to security web sites to try to prevent you from removing it, and downloads a Trojan virus.
According Ben Greenbaum, senior research manager for Symantec Security Response, Conficker C is programmed to begin connecting to 50,000 different domains on April 1 to download updated copies or other malware onto your computer.
What to do: Make sure your computers have the latest Microsoft patches, updates, and that your AntiVirus signatures are current!.
